Ramzi - Myspace
Now I had to think long and hard about whether to include Ramzi as a Band to Watch, largely because integrity and credibility are things I'm very proud of, and I didn't want them tarnished by apparent favoritism due to the fact that Ramzi is a friend and family of one of my bandmates. So in the interests of full-disclosure I wanted to ensure all my readers understood the connection.
That being said, Ramzi is a great up and coming artist on the London R&B scene. In the vein of Justin Timberlake, classic Michael Jackson, and countless soul/R&B singers, Ramzi creates extremely accessible pop music. His outstanding vocals seem absolutely effortless, and he is a consummate entertainer. Perhaps though the reason why he is worthy of inclusion on this Monday's post, is that unlike a lot of other pop sensations, Ramzi writes, records and produces all his own music. This allows his Lebanese/Nigerian heritage to shine through on songs like Love is Blind, which showcases his great flamenco style guitar skills. While at first listen it may seem like you can lump Ramzi in with the load of other pop entertainers, he brings a unique voice to the R&B stage, and is worth a listen.
Sam Prekop - Prekop's Label
Best known for his work with the Sea and Cake, Sam Prekop has been a mainstay of the Chicago post-rock scene since the mid-90s. His latest album, Photographs, is a work startling simplicity given the complex nature of his previous solo efforts. Shying away from the electronic sounds used on "Who's your new professor", Photographs is much more jazzy, mellow and groove laden. This is Prekop as middle-aged artist who has been there, done that, and is now settling into a comfortable situation. While you won't find anything cutting edge on this record, what you will find is a long under-appreciated artist doing what he does best, making super cool music that is supremely easy to listen to. Check him out.
