So I'm at the part in my career as a musician where I have to choose a studio. This hasn't been a problem until now because I've done all my recording at home, however, it is time to become a little more serious. While I enjoy the pleasure and challenge of home recording, I've come to realize that despite the skills I have acquired, I just can't get a Studio Projects B1 to sound like a Neumann no matter how hard I try. I also don't like thinking about the time it would take to do it all myself. So I'm enlisting the help of a professional studio.
Professional studios used to be that rare mecca that musicians would flock to. They were locations of social interaction almost as much as they were of producing music. Then came the digital revolution, and now you google "recording studio Toronto" and come up with hundreds of names. It seems that everybody who's plugged a Firebox into their machine now thinks they are professional. Unfortunately for the cynical musician, like myself, it means having to wade through more and more junk to find the gold.
Given that I'm on a very tight budget, money is a significant issue, and with the rates fluctuating from $33 to $300/hr it makes choosing difficult. Do I go with the inexperienced engineer that will give me lots of his time and energy to making a good EP, or do I go with someone who's worked on Gold Records but will view my project as a quick buck? Trying to find something that is the best of both worlds can be hazardous to one's health, and one's clicking finger.
I'm hopeful that something workable will pop up soon though, because I want to get this EP underway!
