Sitting behind a computer all day searching for jobs is proving to be a little more mentally fatiguing than sitting behind a computer all day reading policy papers. The policy papers at least had something interesting, where as Monster.ca, Workopolis, and the like only show me job after job that I either am not qualified for, am over qualified for, or would take up so much time that it wouldn't give me a chance to keep focusing on music.
The time/money conundrum is a weird one, one that many a self-help book has been written about. My issue is that the two things I would definitely want to pursue on a full-time basis, music and writing, don't pay very well, not even well enough to move out of the house my parents built, if I do pursue them full-time. However all the other jobs out there that would pay the rent, wouldn't leave much time to pursue those musical and written aspirations which I cling to like a three-toed sloth to the upper branches of a shady tree.
I know that in the end I will have to take a job that I won't necessarily enjoy, but hopefully it will provide me with either some musical activity during the day, or it will give me the necessary flexibility to have the time to pursue my dreams outside of work.
That being said, if anybody in the Toronto area needs a dogwalker, daytime babysitter, or other part-time, day-time job, let me know.
Cheers,
Beware! The Leopard

So the dreaded Job Search begins again. I had a couple of connections from London, and it is possible they will pan out, but with the job market the way it is, I'm not holding my breath. As a starving musician, I'm really basically looking for anything out there that won't take up all of my time so that I can do gigs and the like.
Flexible hours would be best, so I've tossed my hat into the world of tutoring and mysteryshopping, we'll see what happens. I'm kind of looking forward to entering the world of the "/" career, but it is a bit daunting for somebody who has always had a steady paycheque at the end or middle of the month.
If you guys have any tips, tricks, or leads, send them my way. Wish me luck!

Beware! The Leopard is trying to make an EP but he needs your help!
As many of you are aware, the Conservative government has been making loads of cuts to funding for the arts in Canada. As a result, competition for the small amount of funds available is getting more and more stiff. So instead of crossing my fingers and hoping for a loan or a grant, I thought I would turn to you, my fans, to help me fund my first EP.
Here's how it works, I need $1000 (supplemented by my own funds) to go into a professional studio and crank out 6 songs. 5 of these songs will form the first Beware! The Leopard EP. The 6th song will be a special exclusive release for people who have donated to the cause. Doners will also get a Beware! The Leopard badge to ease their pain and up their coolness factor.
If I'm going to be able to get this musical dream off the ground, I do really need your help. Please pass this info on to anybody you may know who's got a dime to spare. I'd really appreciate it.
The way it works is that everyone goes to Fundable and pledges a contribution of $10.00 or more. If I don't reach my target in 30 days, then nobody pays anything. If I do reach $1000, then pledges are collected upon the completion of the fundraiser.
I hope you will all help me out here, because I need all the help I can get.
Thanks
Beware! The Leopard

When I'm travelling, as I have been recently, I usually take a wide variety of music along for the ride. For our extended Europe trip, I filled my 4gb Creative Zen with everything from Arcade Fire to Keith Jarret, The Strokes to Ron Sexsmith, and even threw a little Beethoven on there just for fun. Out of all that, I played two bands 90% of the time, Foals and Vampire Weekend.
The former I have been listening to for a while now, since I brought them to your attention more than a year ago (in this post). Vampire Weekend I was a little later in coming to, largely because I'm stubborn and strenously wanted to avoid the hype of the band that was the darling of Pitchfork readers everywhere. I paid for that stubborness by not having listened to them for months that I could have. Months that I could have enjoyed their quirky blend of east-coast intellectual pop (I only learned what a Mansard roof was while traveling through Slovenia).
Both these bands were my traveling staples because they were though provoking without being background music. The intricate arrangements of Foals caused me to question my own guitar songwriting, and to relish in counterpoint and harmony. Not to mention that the energy they provide was more than enough to get me going on those mornings when travel-lag had set in and I was more than ready to sit and enjoy doing nothing for an extended period of time. On those days when I was a bit down, whether it was due to weather, fatigue, or scurvy from a lack of fruit and veg, Vampire Weekend's eccentric lyrics would always cheer me up (fuck the Bears in Provincetown).
I guess you could say that as a music lover, between these two albums almost all of my musical requirements were met, there was saucyness, swagger, introspection, and fine fine musicianship. I highly recommend either of these groups to any intrepid travellers. They make great travel companions.

The prodigal son returns.
With his wife.
To his parents basement.
Temporarily.
He hopes.
Yep, that's right, the London adventure is officially over, and now the Toronto phase of Beware! The Leopard begins. It kicks off with a show April 23rd in Cambridge, which I hope a few of you will be able to make it to. I'm reworking some of my older tunes, and I've got a couple of new ones to try out, it should be great.
I'm getting excited about getting off the ground in Canada. If anybody has any tips, contacts, or suggestions, feel free to pass them along to me at Alex.bewaretheleopard@googlemail.com
Cheers!
