As you all know I've been job searching since our return to Toronto more than a month ago. I've been steadily applying for every type of job under the sun. I decided a long time ago that I'm not returning to Government, at least not yet, or not as a policy analyst. Part of it is because I didn't enjoy the work, I didn't find it challenging, and I didn't enjoy living in Ottawa. The other part is because the job left me with little mental strength to pursue music. If I went back to that now, I would consider it as a bit of a failure on my part as a musician, and I haven't tried hard enough to warrant that tag yet.
Because I've closed the only avenue I have ever been qualified for, I'm stuck with taking a step back, working in retail, customer service, or admin type roles. Still no bites despite loads of resumes out the door. I have also been looking at alternative types of full-time employment, such as dog walking, or caregiving. No luck.
As I'm trying to keep my focus on music, I've set up a budget based on what we expect our expenses to be and figured out that I need $X per month. This amount is approximately what 1 full-time minimum wage job would provide, but now I'm wondering if I could do it with multiple jobs, hence the "slash" career title. So I've thought of a few things that could go in this mix: a part-time job, busking, music career (which includes gigs and merch sales), and perhaps doing some setups and minor electric guitar repairs. None of these things are easy, and I'm not entirely sure that a combination of them will provide the amounts I need, but right now it's looking like a decent option to make some cash, and get out of this limbo that my parents comfortable basement provides.
Anybody else out there with a slash career that has any tips?
